Sermon Theme: The Greatest Gift Ever
Text: Isaiah 9:6-7

"For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."

I. A CHRISTMAS CHILD OF HOPE

+ Recitations By Grade 6

- Jocelyn G: “I know the thoughts that I think toward you”, says the Lord, “thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). Our God is a God of hope. We are His children of hope. When sin entered our world, it not only destroyed man's wonderful relationship with His loving God, it also removed all hope for the future. Hopelessness filled man's heart and life.”
- Bailey G: But the God of hope intervened. With His mercy, He promised to Adam and Eve an “Offspring Who would crush the serpent's head” and restore hope to a lost world. As the years passed, this hope was reaffirmed as God's people waited in faith for that hope to become reality.
- Aben S: The Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 146 - “Blessed is the man whose hope is in the Lord”. In the midst of many life & ministry struggles, the prophet Jeremiah proclaims: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope. Because of the Lord's great mercy we are not consumed; His compassions fail not; They are new every morning.”
- Riley S: On that first Christmas night “hopes and fears of all the years” were finally realized. The Child of Hope came from heaven above and was born as the world's Savior. For us, the Child of Hope has come. And now, in faith and hope we await His coming again in power and glory to take us home to heaven.
- Bryan S: The Apostle Paul reminds us that “our faith rests on the hope of eternal life, which God, Who does not lie, has promised since the beginning of time. And now the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all people as we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Taylor S: Yes, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Peter reminds us that God, Whose promises never fail, has given to us a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We celebrate your coming, O Child of Hope!

II. A CHRISTMAS CHILD OF LOVE

+ Group Recitation By Grade 5 (Christopher B, Brennan W, Jonathan G and Zachary T)

The Bethlehem Infant was indeed a Child of Love – of God's great love for a lost world. It was the Father's love which sent His dear Son to earth, and it was the Son's love which moved Him to come to us that first Christmas as our infant Savior::
“And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David; To be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born Son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2: 1-7)

Grades 5 Returns To Seats

• Choir Song: “Birthday Carol”
+ The Christmas Eve Offering

III. A CHRISTMAS CHILD OF PEACE

+ Grades 3-4 & Ethan To Front

+ Ethan G: The Child of Peace entered a world that far from peaceful – filled with human hatred, strife and conflict. It remains so today. But the ChristChild came bringing the greatest peace ever – spiritual peace between a holy God and sinful man because He paid for our sins. “Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given. And the Kingdom shall be upon His shoulders. And His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” And this is the peace proclaimed by Christmas angels as we now hear:

+ Grades 3-4 Recitation: ”And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not; For behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2: 8-14) Grades 3-4 & Ethan G go to seats

IV. A CHRISTMAS CHILD OF JOY

+ Congregational Carol - “Joy To the World”
( All Children Except PK Go To Front During Last stanza Of Carol)

+ All Children: “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: 'Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning the Child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.” (Luke 2: 15-20)

+ Song By All Children (Not PK) And Choir: “Christmastime”

+ The Lord's Prayer And Benediction (Grades 3-8 Remain Up Front, Rest To Seats)

+Sam N: We have heard the Christmas angels proclaim the good tidings of great joy and we have seen the hearts and lives of shepherds and of ourselves filled with joy and praise. God's great Christmas gift to us this night is This wonderful, heaven-sent Child of Hope, Child of Love, Child of Peace and Child of Joy. Thanks be to God for this indescribable Gift! May we return to our homes and lives glorifying and praising God for all things that we have heard and seen, which the Lord has made known to us. As our Sunday School now sings, “This Peaceful Night” you are invited to join in the conclusion as it leads into the beloved carol, “Silent Night”

+ Song By Grades 3-8 - “This Peaceful Night”

Silent Night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and Child! Holy Infant, so tender & mild, Sleep in heavenly peace.. O holy night! The stars are brightly shining; It is the night of our dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world that night in sin and error pining Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. The Invocation And Confessional Prayer

A Responsive Advent Prayer

P: Eternal Father, throughout the centuries You repeated and reaffirmed Your Promise to send the Offspring of the woman to crush the serpent's head. Through Your prophets of old, You continually directed the eyes of Your people to the advent of their Savior.
C: We praise You, O Lord, for keeping Your promise and sending Your Son to destroy the works of the devil.

P: As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our King, use Your mighty Word to shatter our pride and to rouse us from spiritual slumber and apathy.
C: Move us to take to heart the words of John: “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is near.”

P: You sent your Son to redeem us from sin. Let this Good News be our joy and strength. Use it to cheer the lonely, encourage the fearful, and give hope to the despairing. In these days before Christmas, spare us from the stress of deadlines and the frenzy of commercialism.
C: Fill our lives with message of Your peace and the music of Your grace.

P: Direct our eyes not only to the manger, but also to the skies, where we will see your Son coming again, not as a lowly Child but as the Lord of lords.
C: Lift up our hearts in joyful anticipation of that day.

P: Come quickly, Lord Jesus, in Your grace, in Your power and in Your glory.
C: Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.

The Offering (“The Bethlehem Rose”)
(Vocalist: Heather Schierenbeck; Accompanist: Cathy Augustin)

There's a rose in Bethlehem with a beauty quite divine, perfect in this world of sin, on this silent holy night. There's a fragrance much like hope, that it sends upon the wind, reaching out to every soul from a lowly manger's crib. O Rose of ethlehem, how lovely, pure and sweet. Born to glorify the Father, born to wear the thorns for me There's a rose in Bethlehem colored red like mercy's blood. 'Tis the flower of our faith, 'tis the blossom of God's love. Though its bloom is fresh with youth, surely what will be He knows. For a tear of morning dew is rolling down the rose. O Rose of Bethlehem, how lovely, pure and sweet. Born to glorify the Father, born to wear the thorns for me. There's a Rose in Bethlehem with a beauty quite divine, perfect in this world of sin, on this silent holy night. O wear the thorns for me.

The Lord's Prayers And Benediction

Closing Hymn: “Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming”
(V 1 – All ; V 2 – Ladies & Girls; V 3 – Men & Boys; V 4 - All)

1. Lo, How A Rose e'er blooming From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming As prophets long have sung.
It came, a flow'ret bright, Amid the cold of winter,
When half-spent was the night.

2. Isaiah 'twas foretold it, The Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind,
To show God's love aright, She bore to us a Savior,
When half-spent was the night.

3. This flow'r, Whose fragrance tender With sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor The darkness ev'rywhere.
True Man, yet very God, From sin and death he saves us
And lightens ev'ry load.

4. O Savior,Child of Mary, Who felt our human woe;
O Savior, King of glory, Who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray To the bright courts of heaven,
And to the endless day.

The Invocation And Advent Prayer

The Scripture Reading - 1 John 1: 1 - 7

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,which our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. The Life appeared; We have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have heard and seen, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you; God is light; In Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him, yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the Light, as He is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.”.
