Christ in the Creatures of the Passion -- Order of Lenten Worship:

Hymn 140
Lenten Liturgy:
Invocation and Opening Prayer

Confession of Sins (Psalm 51 Excerpts):
For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done this evil in Your sight. Have mercy on me, O God according to Your loving-kindness, according to the multitude of Your tender mercies. Blot out my transgressions; Wash me thoroughly from my inquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

The Absolution

Sung Response: (Melody Hymn 388)
Just as I am and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, Whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

The Story of Our Lord's Suffering and Death

The Lenten Creed (Luther's Second Article Explanation):
I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true Man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil - not with gold or silver, but with His holy precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death. All this He did that i should be His own, live under Him in His Kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness. Just as He has risen from death, lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.

Hymn 156

Sermon Topic: The Substitute Scapegoat
(Pastor David Schierenbeck)
Sermon Text: Leviticus 16:20-22 (NKJV)

Hymn (Melody Hymn 552):
Hold Thou Thy cross before my faith-filled heart,
Show me Thy love, Thy grace to me impart.
Forgiveness, peace, Thy help in ev'ry need -
My Savior, Shepherd, O abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes,
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heav'n's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

Our Gifts of Faith and Love

Lenten Prayer:
Great Redeemer, strong to save, You came to earth to take our place under the Law, to suffer and die that we might live. during this somber season, we see You agonize, bleed, suffer hell and die - all for us. There are no sins to call for such punishment, except the sins that we have done. It is far beyond our capacity to fathom the Love that takes our place on the cross. Out of this horrible tragedy, You have brought us peace, joy and hope. Through Your cross, we are forgiven and forever free from the guilt, burden and punishment of our sin. What language is there to express our utter and heartfelt thanks to You, dear Savior? Lord, make outs a faithful and meaningful journey to Calvary with You. Help us in word and song and life to ever proclaim: "In the Cross of Christ I Glory". Amen

Lord's Prayer:
Our Father Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
