The Scripture – Acts 22: 1 - 13

The Apostle Paul (formerly zealous Christian persecutor Saul) recounts the events of his own amazing “conversion” – as Jesus appeared to Him first with the frightening reality of His own holy Presence and Saul’s own sin and guilt before Him, and then ultimately with the even more amazing call to faith and to missionary service in His Kingdom. The power of Jesus’ Name and Word (Law and Gospel) to convict, condemn, convert & convince the hearts of sinners remains no less effective today in our hearts and in the hearts of those with whom we share this “strong Word”.

I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. But the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way, He calls, gathers, enlightens and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead; And He will give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

As the Gospel persecution increased, believers began to scatter abroad. As Philip proclaimed the Gospel in Samaria, many believed – and were impressed with the accompanying signs and miracles. One of them, Simon the Sorcerer, believed and followed Philip. As we shall see, his weak faith needed both spiritual guidance and bolstering.

When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given at the laying on of the Apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” Peter answered, “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right with God. Repent of this evil and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive you for having such thoughts.” Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.” When they had testified and proclaimed the Word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the Gospel in many Samaritan villages.

The Invocation And Confessional Prayer

Merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. Too often we have followed the desires of our sinful hearts. We have broken Your holy Law and deserve Your eternal condemnation. Yet, You in love invite us to come to You . Be merciful unto us, most gracious Lord. Forgive our many sins according to Your Gospel promises declared to mankind in Christ Jesus. Strengthen our faith. Empower us by Your Holy Spirit that we may live godly, Christian lives to the glory of Your holy Name. This we ask only because of the merits of our dear Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, instituted the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
C: Praise be to You, O Lord, for giving us this Sacrament by which Christians are strengthened in their faith, uplifted in their spirits, and built up in their love for You.

P: Jesus took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples. Likewise, He took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them.

34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.” 40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
