Order of Worship:

For Pre-Service Reading: Psalm 16, Page 125 In Front Of Hymnal

(10:30) “Hallelujah Chorus” (Handel’s Messiah)

An Opening Confessional Easter Prayer

Hymn 195 – “Christ Jesus Lay In Death’s Strong Bands”

A Responsive Easter Prayer

P: O Lord God, our Strength, our Song and our Salvation, You fulfilled Your promises by the resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead.
C: Thanks be to God! You give us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

P: In Your compassion You sent Christ, the Good Shepherd, Who laid down His life to rescue the lost.
C: Drive out all doubt and gloom that we may delight in your glorious triumph.

P: Lift our eyes heavenward to see Him Who lives to make intercess- ion for the saints, and grant us confidence in the greatness of His power. Keep before us the vision of Your redeemed people standing before Your throne and singing the song of victory.
C: Worthy is the lamb Who was slain to receive wisdom and power and honor and glory and praise.

P: Make us instruments of Your peace as we bring the Good News of hope and new life to those around us. Guide us in the use of all that you have entrusted to us: our time, talents and treasures.
C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for You.

P: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of Your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life.
C: Gracious Father, You have restored to us the joy of Your salvation. With happy hearts, we come before You and say: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen.

The Scripture Reading - Luke 24: 13 - 24

Now that same day two of them were walking from Jerusalem to a nearby village named Emmaus. And as they talked and discussed all that had happened, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them,but they were kept from recognizing Him. And He asked them, “What are you discussing that you are so sad?” And one of them named Cleopas said, “Are you a visitor and do not know what things have happened these days?” “What things?” He asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth”, they replied. “He was a Prophet, mighty in word & deed before God and all the people. Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him over to be condemned and crucified Him. But we had hoped that He was the One to redeem Israel. And now it is the third day. And some of our women went to the tomb earlier today but did not find His body. They told us they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And others who also went found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see.”

The Apostles Creed (Hymnal, Page 12)

Hymn 194 – “Abide With us The Day Is Waning”

The Sermon ……………………………………….. Luke 24: 25 - 35

Jesus said to them: “How foolish you are and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them what was said in the Scriptures concerning Himself. As they approached the village, Jesus acted as if He were going on. But they urged Him: “Stay with us, for it is evening; the day is almost over.” So He remained. And while He was at the table with them, He took bread and gave thanks. And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; And He vanished from their sight. And they said each other: “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Then they returned to Jerusalem, found the disciples and others gathered together and said: “The Lord is risen indeed and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told them everything that had happened and how Jesus was known to them as He broke the bread.

Alleluia, His the triumph, His the victory alone.

Jesus, out of every nation, Has redeemed us by his blood.

2. Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes nor questions how.
Though the cloud from sight received Him When the forty days were o’er,
Shall our hearts forget His promises, “I am with you evermore”?

3. Alleluia! Heavenly High Priest, Here on earth our Help, our Stay;
Alleluia! Hear the sinful Cry to You from day to day.
Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, hear our plea,
Where the songs of all the righteous Sweep across the crystal sea.

Now Lord Christ, Blaster of Death, break into that last fortified stronghold of our hearts and there proclaim the good, great news of life eternal in You. Daily we see death around us,often touching our lives in many ways. We feel its pain, its devastating loss. The Invocation

LET US EVER WALK WITH JESUS (The Bible Location References Will Not Be Read)

….. IN FAITH

P: “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will be betrayed, condemned, abused and killed” (Mark 10: 32-34)
C: Because Jesus “walked” the way of the cross as our Savior, we who have “walked” and fallen into sin and death, have now received mercy and forgiveness from the Lord.

P: In faith we trust God’s promise that “the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin” (I John 1:7) and that “whoever believes in Him shall have eternal life” (John 3:16).
C: We “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

SING: Jesus only can impart Balm to heal the smitten heart;
Peace that flows from sins forgiven, Joy that lifts the soul to heav’n;
Faith and hope to walk with God In the way that Enoch trod.

…….. IN STEP

P: “As you have received Christ,so walk in Him”(Colossians 2:6). As Enoch. Noah, Abraham, David and other faithful “walked with God” – trusting His promises, keeping in step with His Word and “walking in His Truth” (Psalm 26:3), so may we follow in their footsteps (Psalm 17:5).
C: Help us ever to “walk worthy of the Lord… and of our calling” (Colossians 1:10; Ephesians 4:1).

P: Jesus said: “I am the Light; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
C: Help us ever to “walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

Sing: I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s Light.
Look unto Me; Your morn shall rise and all your day be bright”.
I looked to Jesus, and I found In Him My Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of Life I’ll walk Till trav’ling days are done.

…….. INTO ETERNITY

P: We do walk into death alone. “Yea, though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” (Ps 23)
C: “For the Lord has dealt bountifully with me. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears and my feet from falling – that I may walk before You in the land of the living” (Ps 116:8-9).

P: “He who overcomes shall walk with Me in white garments. For they have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. To Him be all glory and praise now and evermore.! (Revelation 3 & 7).
C: “I walk with Jesus all the way. My walk is heavenward all the way.”

Sing: Draw us to Thee; Oh, grant that we May walk the road to heaven!
Direct our way Lest we should stray And from Thy paths be driven.

Draw us to Thee, For then shall we Walk in Thy steps forever,
And hasten on Where Thou art gone To be with Thee, dear Savior.

The Scripture Reading: Hebrews 9: 15-17; 26b-28 (Christ’s “Will” Enacted)

Our Lenten Creed (The 2nd Article of The Creed – Luther’s Explanation)

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the father from eternity, and also true Man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord; He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil – not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent sufferings and death. All this He did that I should be His own and live under Him in His Kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as He has risen from death and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.

Opening Hymn 161 – “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna!”

The Invocation

P: Dear Savior, as we begin Holy Week, we confess our responsibility and guilt for all that happened. Although God and King from all eternity, You in love also became Man – to be condemned and crucified by your fellow man and to be smitten and rejected by God in our stead.
C: We confess our many sins that made necessary your journey to Jerusalem to suffer and die. Have mercy upon us and grant us the peace of sins forgiven.

Sing: Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die.
O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin O’er captive death and conquered sin.

P: As prophesied by Zechariah, You entered Jerusalem not in royal robes or upon a royal steed, but humbly and lowly befitting Your life and ministry of service and sacrifice.
C: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey.”

Sing: Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die.
Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain,Then take,O Christ,Thy power& reign.

P: With the Palm Sunday faithful of all ages and with the company of heaven, we shout our Hosannas in praise of our Redeemer King. Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord.
C: Glory be to Him Who loved us, washed us from each spot and stain. Glory be to Him Who bought us, made us kings with Him to reign! Glory to the Lamb that once was slain.

Sing: Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark! All the tribes Hosanna cry.
O Savior meek,pursue Thy road,With palms & scattered garments strowed.

The Scripture - Philippians 2: 5 - 11
To be our Savior, our Lord’s ministry went from the heights of heaven down to this very earth – to a life of humiliation, to the horrors of death and to the very depths of hell before rising again to life, to heaven and to eternal victory for all who follow Him in faith.

Hymn 769 (Supplement) – “Lift High The Cross”

The Sermon ……………………………………... Matthew 21: 1 - 9
Now when they came near to Jerusalem, Jesus sent two disciples ahead, saying: “Go into the city and you will find a donkey tied; Loose it and bring it to Me. And if anyone says anything, you shall say: ‘ The Lord has need of it.’. All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion: ‘Behold your King is coming to you, lowly and sitting on a donkey’’ So the disciples did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey, laid clothes on it, and Jesus rode upon it. And a great multitude spread their garments on the road; Others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT Sunday, March 9, 2008 (Sunday – 8:30 & 10:30 A.M.)

For Pre-Service Reading: Psalm 31, Page 130 In Front Of Hymnal

Opening Hymn 347 (V 1-4) – “Jesus, Priceless Treasure”

The Invocation And Confessional Prayer

Father in heaven, I confess that it is I who should have been on trial for my many and grievous sins against you and against Your holy Law. It is I who deserves to be convicted, condemned and punished in the divine courts. Yet, where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Your mercy brought Jesus to earth, placed my sin-burden upon Him and led Him to suffer death at the hands of men and eternal punishment at the hands of holy God – all for me. Lead me to the cross and help me ever to look to Jesus as my Savior in faith. Forgive my sins, cleanse my soul and ever keep me safe in Your loving and everlasting arms..

The Absolution

The Apostolic Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.
